Posting this because I reblogged something about Usborne Books and apparently most people seem to associate Usborne with lift-the-flap books for preschoolers.
Which is weird because to me as a child Usborne books were some of the spookiest books I could get my hands on. They filled the same place as Dorling Kindersley - colorful, creative, informative books that were educational as well as fun to read. And their approach to myths and legends was, not going to lie, very formative for me. If it wasnt' for Usborne, there might not have been ABC.
And much like Dorling Kindersley, Usborne went through a phase of extreme creative experimentation before stagnating into safer forms of publishing. But for a while, Usborne books were mindblowing.
So what has Usborne done then that aren't lift-the-flap books for preschoolers? Well, a lot. Puzzle Adventures. Extreme map and code puzzles. How to Draw Books. Cut-out and build houses, Trojan horses, and dinosaurs (by Luis Rey no less). How to Be A Detective. Nature spotter's guides. Nature Search books. Facts and Lists books that instilled cosmic horror in me years before I knew what cosmic horror was. I could go on forever.
There was a series of excellent myths and legends books which I posted about before.
These were illustrated by Rodney Matthews and were every bit as metal as you'd expect from something by Rodney frickin' Matthews.
Then there were the Quest books which were Where's Waldo-esque books that followed a storyline in a fantasy world.
In this case, they showcased lush art by Nick Harris in which you find various items or characters to make the story progress, as well as other random things (find 10 rats, find 8 clownfishes, etc).
The Tabloid Histories books, oh my gosh.
Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Medieval, etc. history told through tabloid articles and ads.
More about monsters though! There were books about folktales and legends illustrated by Stephen Cartwright.
For me it was my first time hearing of a lot of them, such as the Lambton Worm!
The Haunted World, now that was spooky! With lots of colorful, dripping art by Graham Humphreys.
Introduced me to a lot of ghosts, vampires, and monsters from around the world. Such as the story of Arnold Paole!
And there were maps and diagrams...
... and lindorns [sic] and mokele-mbembes!
The Supernatural Guides had denser text but sadly have not been reprinted anytime recently.
The World of the Unknown series, though... ohohoho those were good.
Of course (no offense to fans of ghosts and UFOs), I had eyes only for the Monsters book. With such gems as the Velue...
... the Lambton Worm...
... and cryptozoological rubbish such as the Monongahela sea serpent (below), the Loch Ness Monster, the Abominable Snowman, and their ilk.
You know, the sort of thing that would keep a 7-year-old fascinated (and perhaps scared under the blankets) for weeks.
Anyway, yeah I just really love Usborne books. Or at least what they used to be.

A stand-alone Regency Everlark One shot inspired by this
Read on Ao3
She peers around the shrubbery, thankful to see the next row vacant before glancing over her shoulder to ensure she’s alone. Years of childhood games in the Mellark hedge maze have made navigating them second nature. She knows all the most secluded tucked away spots.
Scowling down at a cluster of lilacs, she contemplates how long she linger here before her absence is noted, when the sound of heavy footfall moving purposefully towards her interrupts her thoughts. Her heartbeat quickens.
“Are you lost Miss Everdeen?” A man’s voice comes from behind her.
She whirls around and there he is, just a few yards away.
His face has lost some of its boyish roundness, his shoulders broader, and his hair has grown out, but despite all the small changes, his smile is the same. She lets out a strangled shriek, taking two steps before launching herself into his arms.
Two years.
It’s been two long years since she saw him last.
They’d lived in the same county all their lives, but had only really become acquainted at eleven when she and her sister had moved to their Guardian's estate. The Mellark lands bordered Lord Abernathy’s and as a consequence the inhabitants of both houses spent much time together. The seeds were sown and while all the children soon became chums, Katniss and Peeta's friendship blossomed into romance.
By the age of sixteen they were madly in love and eager to wed, however, although the match was generally approved of, their prospects were grim. As a third son there was no land nor income to inherit, and even with Katniss’s generous dowry, the money would quickly dwindle without an occupation.
Peeta’s eldest brother Graham, head of the Mellark family, had proposed a solution; he would finance Peeta’s artistic endeavors abroad if he would only wait to attach himself until after his return. The offer was too generous for her to allow him to turn down for her sake.
So he had gone, and she had stayed and waited for his return.
“That was rather unladylike,” he teases in the affected accent of the odious vicar’s wife.
She scowls up at him, “Have you taken a fancy for fine ladies while you were away. You’ve always had a weakness for beauty.” She lifts her chin. “Perhaps you’d prefer Lady Undersee or Miss Cartwright?”
He uses his index finger to smooth the wrinkle in her brow. “An eye for beauty, not a weakness,” he says, cupping her face and caressing her cheek with his thumb. “No, you are still my one weakness. But what of you? Your new cousin is not as common as your letters would have had me believe. Do I have a rival?”
Colonel Hawthorne had become a regular fixture at Victor’s Village since her guardian had married his mother. He’s escorted her to many an event as an easy introduction to the eligible ladies of her acquaintance. Not that he needed it, his looks and military status were admired wherever he went. She supposes he’s handsome, but his smiles are far too rare for her to find him really attractive.
No. This man was her choice; anything else was unimaginable.
They’d coorsponded frequently over the years. Though it was the right decision, Katniss had spent many a sleepless night wondering if she could compete with the beauty and splendor he enjoyed while away.
He’s still smiling though she knows him well enough to see the uncertainty in his eyes. It had never occurred to her that he might be in doubt of her constancy as well.
Words often fail her at times such as these, so she allows her actions to lead. Grasping the hand that has since paused its motion, she turns it to find his ring. It no longer gleams as it had when she’d gifted it to him with the plait of hair, but she smiles despite it; The worn gold surface and fraying dark tresse a testament to its continuous wear. She runs her thumb over its surface, before bringing it to her lips, peering up at him through her lashes, “There is no competition. My heart belongs to you alone.”
He sighs and a rigidity she had not noticed previously, melts away as he leans in to rest his forehead to hers. “I have much to tell you.”
His voice sends a delicious shiver down her spine, and she can wait no longer, “and I should like to hear it all, but there will be many chaperoned hours to speak and only a precious few moments here alone.”
“Right you are,” she can hear rather than see his smile as his lips meet hers.
This was the place she first kissed him.
They’d been thirteen and playing ghost in the graveyard. Stumbling upon each other while hiding in the hedges, Peeta’s voice, not yet lowered, carried high over the shrubbery and in a desperate attempt to silence him, she’d kissed him… At least that was the excuse he’d given her meddlesome sister who’d spotted them.
At eighteen their kisses are just as giddy, if not half so innocent as the stolen ones of their youth. She loses herself and all sense of time in the reunion, until a feminine voice cuts through the passionate haze, “Mr. Mellark!”
They spring apart, wide eyed, and undeniably guilty, but the speaker is nowhere to be found.
“What a lovely party,” Katniss slumps in relief as Primrose’s voice floats over the hedges.
An indistinguishable muffled response comes from the same direction and Katniss turns back to Peeta, inspecting them both for signs of their wanton activities, before the voices raise loud enough to be heard yet again, “Primrose, now that we’ve dispensed with the niceties, you wouldn’t happen to know where I can find my brother, would you?”
“Last I saw, he was headed towards the house.”
She silently apologizes for any hash thoughts she’s ever had of her sister. She suspects Prim had caught on to their plot and followed her here to stand guard. Peeta could exit the maze to the north, round the corner and appear to have just come from inside. Katniss makes note to purchase a pocketful of peppermints for her sister in thanks on the next trip to town.
The male voice, Graham, she’s determined, hums an acknowledgement, “and what of your sister? I have not seen her this last quarter hour either.”
“I’m certain Posy is with Hazelle,” Prim says, sounding far too innocent to Katniss’s ear.
“That is not the sister to whom I refer.”
“Oh! You mean Katniss,” she winces at her sister’s overzealous acting. “Have you checked the refreshment table? She’s often stationed there.”
Forget the peppermints, she’d sneak pepper in Prim’s next cup of tea. She can feel Peeta’s body trembling with repressed laughter behind her and she jabs her elbow into his stomach. Perhaps she’ll add some to his next cup as well.
Graham’s voice comes again as another set of footsteps approach, “Ah, brother, you have just come from the house, did you see the guest of honor while there?” Really this was his fault. Had he not arranged this gathering for Peeta’s return, there would be no cause for them to sneak off.
“I did not. Is he missing?” The mirth is evident in the middle Mellark’s voice as he continues, “how curious, the elder Miss Everdeen appears to be missing as well? He has not been away from home so long as to lose his way in the hedge maze, do you suppose? I could rally a search party if you wish-”
Katniss huffs, none of them should expect decent tea next she pours.
“That will be unnecessary.” Graham says before raising his voice, “I’m certain wherever they are, they will both find their way back to the party before their absence is more widely noted.”
The trio depart with a choir of laughter, but not before the shrubbery in front of them jostles, from the other side.
Peeta chuckles softly, “It’s good to be home,” it’s said without irony, and she can’t help but smile despite herself. “I’ll call tomorrow,” he says, dropping a final kiss before lowering his voice next to her ear, “If I remember correctly, there are plenty of paths to lose our way on at Victor’s Villiage. After all, they can’t watch us all the time.”

peeta modern verse viii : in a rural town of west virginia, peeta is the youngest son of three. his eldest brother is a perfectionist as he excelled in everything he did growing up and is now an honor student in college. the second eldest brother, the athletic one and captain of the wrestling team. peeta could be the one that excels in athletics like his second brother, but athletics is not where his passion lies even though he still participates on the wrestling team with his brother. peeta started a social media account dedicated to his cake decorating which then turned into more than just decorating but baking his own foods and sharing recipes. peeta actually desires to start his own bakery business up in a bigger city as scary as it sounds but he would like to bring a small-town mellark barker, someone, that more people would be able to enjoy. College is out for him to his mother’s disdain and even his father told him to go to college for a business degree at the very least.
in high school, he is social and friendly to everyone who speaks to him. he isn’t terrible when it comes to his grades and very helpful when it comes to group projects. granted, if it has anything to do with science he won’t be afraid to ask for help. out of the other subjects mandatory by the school, history is his strength. delly cartwright, childhood best friend, was the one to really encourage peeta to strive for his dreams.
when he turns 18, at this point it becomes knowledge that he had not applied for college and does not plan on going. frustrated with him, his mother kicks him out. graham attempted to ease her mind at the same time of giving peeta a chance to at least stay the summer and work in the bakery still. however, mrs. mellark had enough of peeta not doing what was right for him and gave up for him to live his own life and not to come crying back to her when he failed.
after completing a two year baking school, peeta takes his social media presence and broadens it to create his own pop-up bakery shop where he caters for events and as well hosts classes on how to make bread or desserts. even though as the owner, he is no longer anonymous when it comes to how he runs the social media, he still keeps the focus on his bakery rather than himself and is not in many of the posts unless he is promoting.

Giftmas Request from @midnightsaboteur
Explanations under the ✂️
Mason x Serena - As you know, he's been leaving her flowers outside her door every Monday since they met so she'll have a nice start to the week. Busy with family on Christmas and being the shy guy he is, Mason kept quiet over the weekend with his family. But, Monday morning she has a wintery bouquet with a card that invites her to his for dinner. He's taken off work and prepared a whole meal for her and has several little presents waiting and it's sort of his way of a date, but it's Mason, so unless she calls it that we know he's just going to pretend it's his way of showing he appreciates her for being this sort of calming lighthouse/ patient anchor for him. Other gifts include ice skates because that's his little secret morning thing and he'd like her to go with him some time.
Cara x Junior - The Cartier unisex love bracelet because it's possessive without being obvious and she wants to.
Jasleen x Walt - She's gotten him a very hoity toity bourbon of the month subscription for 2023 in hopes that she'll be around to taste it all on his mouth.
Aubrianna x Beau - I should preface this with: The Cartwrights are bad gift givers. She's invited him on the annual family trip to Matt's estate in Byron Bay next June and has gotten him a surfboard for said trip. Too much? Probably. But I feel like her cousin's probably only encouraged this with a shoot your shot speech.
Aurélie x Jude - Is she slowly having parts of the palace remodeled to be homey for Jude? Yup. For Elie, quality time is more important than things, but little things are definitely happening in Copenhagen.
Pembe x Ethan - Pem made Ethan an entire plateware set, but she also made a matching slow feeder and water bowl for sweet Ruby.
Taney x Daniel - A very pretty new collar and gold leash for her favorite treasure.
Hannelore x Felix - It looked like she was just just leaving him a little cute Christmas card when she kissed him goodbye to head back to Aspen but there's a QR code and it's just a file of boudoir photos and recordings of her getting off thinking about him.
Graham x Zara - He got her a simple gold bracelet with a 'g' on it. He has a matching chain/necklace with a 'z'.
Ellis x Melody - A neon light for the room she makes her OF content in that reads 'get naked'.
Quin x Little Pet - A lot of very pretty and damn expensive presents for him to tear/cut apart.
Luca x Stefanie - He'll have the whole day planned (you'll see), but there will be a lot of little romantic gifts for her under the tree. Gifts to help her relax and feel as special as he thinks she is like bath bombs/salts/scrubs and all of her favorite treats.
-- and then there was Victoria who just wants Jack to get out of the water and ruin her again --

Elizabeth Jennings Graham (March 1827 – June 5, 1901) was a teacher and civil rights figure.
She was born free to Thomas L. Jennings and Elizabeth Cartwright, they had three children. Her father was a Freeman and her mother was born enslaved. He became a successful tailor and an influential member of New York’s Black community. He was the first Black person to hold a patent in the US in their name, he was awarded a patent for developing dry scouring, a new method to dry clean clothing.
In 1854, she insisted on her right to ride on an available NYC streetcar at a time when all such companies were private and most operated segregated cars. Her case was decided in her favor in 1855, and it led to the eventual desegregation of all NYC transit systems by 1865.
She started the city’s first kindergarten for African-American children, operating it from her. NYC co-named a block of Park Row “Elizabeth Jennings Place” after a campaign by children from PS 361.
On Sunday, July 16, 1854, she went to the First Colored Congregational Church, where she was an organist. She boarded a streetcar of the Third Avenue Railroad Company at the corner of Pearl Street and Chatham Street. The conductor ordered her to get off. She refused, and the conductor tried to remove her by force. With the aid of a police officer, she was ejected from the streetcar.
The incident sparked an organized movement among African American New Yorkers to end racial discrimination on streetcars. Her story was publicized by Frederick Douglass in his newspaper, and it received national attention. Her father filed a lawsuit against the driver, the conductor, and the Third Avenue Railroad Company in Brooklyn. This was one of four streetcar companies franchised in the city and had been in operation for about one year. She was represented by the law firm of Culver, Parker, and Arthur. Her case was handled by the firm’s 24-year-old junior partner Chester A. Arthur, future POTUS.
The jury awarded her damages for $250 as well as $22.50 in costs. The next day, the Third Avenue Railroad Company ordered its cars desegregated. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

Royals Spotted at Hampton Estate Birthday Party
The Hampton family was celebrating the 88th birthday of Sir Graham Hampton, beloved patriarch of the family, at their expensive estate in Windenburg. The garden party was attended by the crème de la crème of Lunarian high society, including some of our favorite Royals.
Sir Graham Hampton was made an Officer of the Realm by the Crown Prince’s late grandfather, His Majesty King Vincent, forty-five years ago for his service in the House of Commons (AKA the HoC, which now holds little to no political power in the Lunarian government contrary to back in Sir Hampton’s heyday.) where he continually fought for the common folks’ welfare and quality of life. Sir Hampton, despite being born into the incredibly old and incredibly wealthy Hampton family and sitting on an inheritance of over a billion simoleons, became a voice for the people, helping King Vincent push back against the House of Lords (HoL) back in the day and organizing the House of Commons into something more than a puppet organization used to aid the HoL.
His greatest achievement within the HoC, which also gave King Vincent the incentive to make him an Officer of the Realm, was his part in pushing forward the law that would allow women the right to sit in the HoC, which previously, like the HoL and the Crown, did not allow women to hold office or propose legislation (although his proposal to allow women into the HoC was a giant leap in the right direction for the Lunarian Women’s Rights movement, to this day neither the HoL or the Crown allow any female successors to hold power in their own right). His work made him incredibly popular and he was a prominent leader in the HoC until his retirement almost a decade ago.
It was no surprise when we captured His Royal Highness Crown Prince Nicholas at the beloved former politician’s celebration, right by young Elliott Hampton’s side. The two have been inseparable best friends since their days at the University of Britechester and continue to spend plenty of time together. Elliott’s grandfather treats HRH as one of his own grandchildren because the two have been so close over the course of the last decade.
Prince Nicky looked suave in his navy suit when snapping a pic with his best friend. The two were the “entertainers” of the party according to the other guests, apparently cracking jokes with Sir Graham and playing minor pranks on him.
“He [Sir Graham] has always had a stern countenance,” an inside source at the event tells us. “It all goes away when the boys are with him though. Elliott and Nicky bring out a childish side in him that isn’t seen by anyone outside of his close circle.”
Other notable attendees for the event include HRH Princess Annaliese and Her Imperial Highness Princess Minerva, whom both were photographed arriving together to the party. Princess Minerva was Ana’s plus one for the afternoon and evening, reportedly taking a well deserved break from her many charities here in the capital. The two were seen catching up with Lisa Cartwright-Hampton, wife of Elliott Hampton and former supermodel.
(Above Top: The three ladies share a lively chat before the birthday cake is brought out, each looking stunning in their floral fascinators. Bottom: Princess Ana and Princess Minerva arrive to the Hampton estate arm in arm as each other’s plus ones.)
For the party Princess Ana dressed to impress, arriving in a pastel pink, sleeveless Channel dress trimmed with white ruffles. The finishing touches of her outfit were her matching pink fascinator and gold and pearl necklace and earrings and a pair of adorable white heels. HRH also decided to keep her dark locks in a braided updo.
Lisa Cartwright-Hampton kept up the pastel theme with her simple lilac ensemble which showcased her incredible diamond and pearl necklace, a wedding gift from her in-laws. Her own hair was let down to frame her face in loose waves.
Finally, Princess Minerva missed the memo on the pastel color code but she still looked fantastic in navy blue! HIH’s peplum wrap jacket and matching skirt set are from fashion house Lafayette, a Pierreland based designer who catapulted into fame recently after winning the Designer of the Year Award back in HIH’s homeland. The sophisticated top was accented with a lovely bow and fit HIH like a glove. She too let her down for the day, leaving it in loose curls and topped off with a floral and pearl headband.
